Doyle Dane and Bernbach's "Think Small" Campaign

George Lois said about this challenge, "They wanted us to sell a Nazi car in a Jewish Town." Overseeing this challenge, Bernbach assigned art director Helmut Krone and copywriter Julian Koenig in charge of this bold task. Strongly influenced by Paul Rand, Krone was more concerned with design than advertising and didn't want to focus on the selling aspects of the car itself. What they did instead began a creative revolution in advertising.

Doyle Dane and Bernbach utilized a simple, straight-forward approach in this campaign. It was honest and appealed to normal everyday Americans. The Volkswagen Beetle wasn't a fancy car and instead of trying to make it sound fancy, they exemplified the exact opposite of fancy. This approach made it relatable and appealing to the average person. With this approach, Krone and Koenig gave the Volkswagen Beetle and lovable and almost human personality. This would later begin a new trend in the advertising world.

Wieden Kennedy

First off, they came up with the popular Nike slogan of the day "Just do it" so who means to say Wieden+Kennedy advertising agency wouldn't come up with a commercial for Nike like this.

In my opinion it's pretty clever to show the idea of taking people out of their norm and putting them in a similar yet separate setting creatively and realistically.

BBH Johnnie Walker Commercial

This commercial for Johnnie Walker whiskey is using a monumental figure awakened from a slumber to represent not only part of the brand's logo but also to represent a powerful product that's taking people by surprise and enticing them to notice this massive figure, just like they should take notice of the product.

TBWA/Chiat/Day

TBWA/Chiat/Day philosophy is when you bring your brand idea alive in the right medium to an audience tuned in and open to your story, then you're not creating advertising. You're creating meaning. The two spots below do just that.

The Nissan Altima "Enough" commercial takes the easy fill tire alert feature on the all-new Nissan Altima and applies it to everyday life.

The Infiniti JX "Doghouse" commercial explores the innovative technologies that help keep family time the best time of all.

Both commercials take the features of the product and tie them into a relatable experience for the viewer. They are creating relatable meaning through the stories they are telling.

Old Spice & Humor

Old Spice shakes things up by using humor to sell body wash to a younger male demographic. This campaign is still one of my favorites.

"The campaign began with simple TV ads, which then went viral on YouTube. The follow-up program in which Mustafa recorded funny videos in response to fans, bloggers and Twitter influencers hit it out of the park in the zeitgeist." - http://mashable.com/2010/07/27/old-spice-sales/

First Impressions Mean Everything

Advertisements don't really get a second chance. The first impression means everything. They can tell deep stories and have layered narratives but if it doesn't grab attention quickly at the surface level, the viewer will never know...

Below is a collection of links with different advertising campaigns meant to inspire, influence, and ignite thinking.
